"planet rock" - afrika bambaataa and the soul sonic force

ok, this isn't a lp, but deserves a mention as an essential hip hop tune.  originally released in 1982, this has to be the tune that turned so many heads towards hip hop culture.

"it will take a nation of millions" - public enemy

public enemy's image was more about black pride than gangster rap.  controversial at the time - but only because they made a noise, spoke their minds, then happened to be heard by people who didn't like what they heard.

"the chronic" - dr dre

first debut album from the former nwa member is a landmark lp for gangster rap.  paving the way for others, this album also introduced us to snoop doggy dogg.

contains: "ain't nuthin but a g thang", "let it ride"

"3 feet high and rising" - de la soul (g)

the original 'hippy' rappers that developed a completely different style of hip hop.

"paid in full" - eric b and rakim (g)

the sample frenzy on this album probably accounted for the james brown and funk revival at the time!

contains two hip hop classics "i know you got soul" and "paid in full" - still rocks the dance floors today.

"the infamous mobb deep" - mobb deep (g)
