mish mash ten by andy crowther (not in any particular order):

andy is resident dj at the monthly whistlebump night in london alongside simon haggis.

andy can also be seen djing at various venues in and around london.  after a summer break that included a excellent boat party, whistlebump prepare to restart soon!

prince – “controversy” [warner] - much interest in all things purple right now, what with the remake project of classic tracks by artists such as hefner just released, here's a reminder of how good the man himself can be. positive funky soul music - he even gets away (just) with throwing in the lord's prayer!

chris rea – “
on the beach” [magnet] - a tune to brighten up the late dark nights - the full 7 minute version of this really cooks once the brazillian break kicks off. cheesy? nah!

restless soul feat. valerie etienne – “beautiful” [people] - phlash shows maw how it should be done. smashing.

block 16 feat. jon lucien – “
morning sun” (pepe braddock remix) [nuphonic] - soft, long, and very very strong, pepe burns it deep again.

shalark – “
as long” [karat france] - from a weird but great 4 track ep, a fresh soulful vocal track that's crying out for an extended remix.

jah wobble / the edge / h. czukay – “hold on to your dreams” [island] - written by arthur russell, produced by francois kevorkian, a fantastic vocal groover from the "snakecharmer" ep. more music should be like this.

butch cassidy sound system – “
brothers & sisters” [red hook] - awesome slice of modern reggae. totally anthemic. hold tight for their lp

beatless – “life mirrors” lp [ubiquity] - great lp that takes a few listens to really get in too, but tracks like "the truth, part 2" and the title track are superlative modern soul tunes. also has a tasty cover of "hercules" on it.

marianne faithful – “why d'ya do it” [island] - totally filthy lyrics, totally excellent reggae groove.

wings – “
goodbye tonight” [cbs] -  suprisingly good end-of-the-nighter! paul & co. turn out a twisted disco vibe.

"ten albums by artists with a name beginning with 's'" (in alphabetical order). by ben jolly of barely breaking even clubs and promotion:

ben can be seen djing in and around london with pete adarkwah at night people @ bar rumba on fridays (last one november 16th), bubbling over @ bar rumba on sundays and at other one off's.

santa esmerelda and leroy gomez - "don't let me be misunderstood" [phillips] - check the mad horns as used by johnny d and nicky p

santana - "
abraxas" [cbs] - funk rock god at his very best

sergio mendes and brasil 77 - "
pais tropical" [a & m] - much covered "zanzibar" given a proper work out

shamek farrah and the folks - "
la dee la la" [ra] - "waitin for marvin" never fails to move me

shuggie otis - "
freedom flight" [epic] - the original of "strawberry letter 23", but even with the lyrics i still don't know what the hell it is about.

spencer davis group - "i'm a man" [united artists] -  title track crosses the rock / funk boundaries very nicely.

steely dan - "
aja" [abc] - a classic album from fagin and co. check out michael macdonald on bvs.

steve miller band - "fly like an eagle" [capitol] - much sampled, well worth a listen.

stevie wonder - "
songs in the key of life" [motown] - is "as" the most uplifting song ever written?

supremes - "
at their best" [motown] - "bad weather" is my favourite tune of the moment.

current ten by simon haggis (not in any particular order):

simon can be seen djing at venues around the uk.  also the resident dj at the whistlebump events, records as klash and works for strut records.

metro area - “metro area 4” [environ] - essential. it's brilliant. 'strut' is really good, and the main track 'miura' is stunning and a little like the dub of:

shirley lites – “heat you up (melt you down)” [west end] - from the levan playlists and co-produced by martinelli & todd who worked with loose ends this hasn't really dated, or maybe it's sounds have come back into favour thanks to stuff like the metro area series.

evelyn 'champagne' king – “i don't know if it's right” [rca]

zook – “slinky” [empire 7"] - from jb's on hanway street in london, it's made by bill who works behind the counter. very laid back shuffling drums, nice chilled guitar.

“the baby huey story” [curtom lp] - 'baby' weighed 350lbs, some wicked breaks, produced by curtis mayfield.

marvin gaye – “t plays it cool” [motown]

marlon d. & frankie ojeda – “miss our love” feat ocean [underground collective recordings] - dennis ferrer & romatt remixes but the orginal mix is better, with a deep, sparse piano & nice vocal.

alton miller – “paradise” [nrk]

brainstorm – “journey to the light”  (ashley beedle's it's getting dark re-edit) [strut] - at last, finished copies!

black lodge – “horse with no name” [mo' wax] - man parrish's 'male stripper' over white horse's 'laid back'! on the flip loads of little drops like judge jules going on about how 'acid is just the music, not the drugs, no, not at all, not for me, not drugs, me no drugs, drugs? no'

current ten from dj marcia carr.

marcia carr's profile is way too long to list here! she guest dj's at major parties and guest presents radio shows.

don't forget to check her website: www.plasticmine.nl

mondo grosso -"star suite" (shelter vocal mix) [king street sounds] - the best remix of any track this year; blaze's finest moment yet. needs must urge a two copy pick up on this blessed tune!

ginuwine - "
my whole life" (kadena house mix) [white label] - an illicit soul house version from detroit of ginuwine's latest on epic titled "difference".  look out for this on uk release come january 2002.

e-smoove - "confessions" ep [focus recordings] -  e-smoove-ly does it again.  4 slamming cuts with the old chicago feel, some jazz and gospel, not forgetting the right impetus to make them floor fillers now.

copeland - "
love unconditional" [acetate] - he's worked on some tracks we've all bought over the years.  on this gospel project with a boogie flavour set to blow up come the new year.

pound boys - "love, peace, harmony" [83 west] - the denver duo craig and dealer provide another soulful string-laden vocal fronted winner for the heads.

dana byrd - "
your luv" (danny krivit edit) [wave] - a joey longo aka pal joey smooth production which is in it's element when your ears catch body & soul man danny krivit's divine edit.

usher - "
you got it bad" (toddy terry's latin club mix) [arista] - house legend nyc bad boy todd politely keeps hold of the soul essence in this surefire mix.

maurice fulton - "
tarzan girl" [transfusion] - from his well-received "strees" lp comes one of the highlights for me.

bbt - "
god's child" ep [defected white label] - tough disco injected club tools; using a ritchie havens classic.  apparently yielding much interest for dj seamus haji who's behind it.

bb niks - "
7 days and 7 nights" (silk machete's mix) [champion] - the chicago house kids project is twisted out of proportion with great results by silk machete and italy's bini & martini

likely to be playing on my outernational vibes show on www.gaialive.co.uk alt sats between 4-6pm i dj at various places – when asked!

debbie is also manager of the band momo.

momo – “the birth of dar” – [apartment 22] - no apologies for including this again! gathering accolades internationally from all who hear it the dons of dar’s debut celebrates a whole new dance genre fusing deep moroccan roots with present and future club beatz , burns up the dancefloors and refuses to leave my decks! short-listed for bbc r3 crossing boundaries award

bapi das baul – “senses” [promo so far] - such innovation & energy! bapi das paul is a maverick percussionist and singer who leads a cross-grooves outfit complete with kathak dancer and a mix of traditional asian and western pop instruments. plans are afoot for a double live bill with momo

shusheela raman – “salt rain” [narada world] - 3 years in process & mercury award shortlisted,  this beautiful album is perfect for chill-out zones or home enjoyment, transcending classification. susheela emerges from the joi melting pot &  succeeds in placing ancient indian vocal styles in truly multi-faceted arrangements.

rocky dawuni – “crusade” [whodun records] - ghanaian dawani voices in an uncanny lee perry era bob  marley style over crisp original rhythms that reach the belly and the brain the way good reggae is supposed to . definitely a club record but also with a great chill factor and certainly one for the rewind

got-ta-scatta – “a wonderful thing/still i rise” [salu] - ep actually, makin’ waves wherever it gets heard. maya angelou in superbly ironic yet joyous form sampled over seriously phat latin/fela infused  beatz. this appeared in the gaialive offices for me and i’m addicted

nucleus roots – “nucleus roots in dub” [nucleus roots] - if you ever doubted the power , integrity  and intoxication factor of uk home-grown savour this. johno and crew mash down all preconceptions with  heavyweight uplifting dubs revisiting their debut album & then some. unless you live in france this is only available at gigs – wake up you reggae distributors!

leleo e david villefort – “original sound track for 2000 nordestes” [kitchen productions] - gotta somehow see the flick that merits such a wonderfully fast-paced exploration of brazilian beats from a lounge lizard/d’n’b perspective. thanks to kitchen prod via internet dj  ricardo camillo for sending me this

transglobal underground – “boss food store” [arc 21] - sure is boss with many flavours, benefiting from south african vibes from doreen theobikile webster, as funkily ruuud as ever . tgu are the masters of cross-cultural explosions and this is worth the long wait

natacha atlas – “ayeshtani” [mantra] - with each release atlas is increasingly confident to delve deeper in her cultural heritage whilst becoming bolder in her arrangements. her voice is better than ever here and she gives a great new face to ‘i put a spell on you’ alongside luscious new material

jah wobble and bill laswell’s solaris – “radioaxiom” [palm pictures] - awesome live this is bass culture in  brain expanding dimensions delivered by supremos. both are disarmingly modest about their major contribution taking the music to the next bridge. the wonderful voice of ethiopian gigi features  making her eponymous palm pictures debut essential

blue monkeys – “
the way you make me feel” [spinning wheel] 2001 - future funk out of germany slightly on the broken beat tip and with great vocals

girls on top – “we don't give a damn about our friends” [girls on top] 2001 - crazy record from the guys (or girls) that brought you the whitney/kraftwerk cut up "i wanna dance with numbers". this time some funky female vocals are perfectly laid over a loop of gary newman's "our friends electric" to great effect

nycc – “i'll keep a light in my window” (disco version) [rca] 1978 - amazing disco version of a gospel tune that raises the roof on any club when it's played out

oba funke – “
buttamilk” (domu's soya spread mix) [karma giraffe] 2001 - new funky broken beat business from what used to be the dynamite joint label. domu's mix has both feet in the future but is still full of soul

balanco trio – “
consolacao” [imperial] 1965 - from the lp "ritmo..bossa..balanco" this is the ultimate sound of 60's brasil. the album is full of quality bossas, and this one is the cream of the crop. proper brasilian music
