gil explains how billie and john have saved his life. foster sylvers - "misdemeanor" [mgm records] - is it michael jackson in disguise? probably not, but it certainly sounds like it. syl johnson - "different strokes" [twilight records] - sample city, but not only that a top tune too. betty davis - "if i'm in luck i might get picked up" [just sunshine records] - ridiculously funky guitar with a rock edge. the jacksonians - "california dreamin'" [pawn just] - because I'm collecting alternative versions of this song. ohio players - "funky worm" [westbound records] - snoop doggy dogg owes a big debt to this 1973 tune. ecstacy, passion and pain - "ask me" [roulette] - recorded this from the radio and played my cassette recording so much that it snapped. when i found the 7" at crazybeat i was soooo happy. curtis mayfield - "you're so good to me" [rso] - mary j blige's "be happy" lifts the whole backing track, but curtis give us the definitive version. bobby rush - "mary jane" [galaxy] - poor man's smoked so much he's spent all his money and lost his car. carl davis and the chi-sound orchestra - "windy city theme" [chi-sound] - for norman, who played me so much good shit back when I was young and impressionable.
