1. various - "better
days are coming"
[zodoa records] – thanks
to tommy da hat for sending me this wondrous slice of fresh ital sounds.
herica b’s definitive last word on lost love, pinky dread’s firing
warnings, wisdom from chriscinti and ras igie. and a classic in the making -
bobby wrong from mark ten
2. anjali - "anjali"
[wiiija]
- anjali’s not afraid
to go schmoozy vocalswise as she rides heavyweight
d’n’b’n’bollywood’n’roll soundscapes she created herself with
minimal co-composing support from some awesome names on da scene in a nicely
paced album
3. zion train - "secrets of the
animal kingdom in dub"
[universal egg] - actually
dubbed up a coupla years ago but still mind-stretchingly crisp, zion train
offer originals each with an animalistic characteristic. can you guess
which? perch and tench et al give of their herbs-inspired best as ever.
check out vibronics -dub italiser as well whilst you’re fired up
4. various - "future world funk - further
adventures in afro, funk, dub and future world beats"
[ocho] - russ jones and cliffy
know how to select global vibes from the leftfield . nice recognition for
bollywood brass band, juttla, stand-out track – divers, dirty dub from
boozoo bajou. file alongside the rough guide to world dancemusic from the
world music network
5. mandali"
[sterns] - a dream ticket
of salif keita, koffi olomide, thione seck, sekouba bambino and that’s
less than half of the giants of african sounds on this fusion of salsa and
afro-beats. i’d just love to hear some women in there next time!
6.
joi -
"we are three"
[realworld] - farouk
and the gang with the ever present spirit of haroun overseeing bold and phat
beats that never forget where they came from
7. various - the first five"
[outcaste] - featuring
nitin sawhney, badmarsh & shri, ravi shankar and others that outcaste
either gave us or would have liked to. a fine soundtrack of the … first
five years of a label that gave expression to a whole new genre
8. various - "kevin beedle presents nu jazz
generation II" [bbe]
- a masterful selection of
nu takes on the jazz-dance that irresistibly shakes up many a party way into
the night. the clyde remix of kimbu kimra’s - raise the dead is
spine-thrilling and stephane attias’ - brazilian flight song is indicative
of the whole album in skillfully side-stepping cliché
9. new deal"
[m.e.l.t.2000] - that
‘difficult second album’ presents no problems for the tunisian based in
paris imbibing all that that metro-fused capital has to offer. addictive
berber-styled bass lines, gypsy violin, spacey jazz, beatz and sultry vocals
just for starters – a must have!
10. various - "nirvana lounge"
selected by claude challe and ravin [wag] -(uk distribution by
discovery). the nirvana lounge holds even more secrets to louche living than
buddha’s diner (another challe gem). somehow he manages to find those
tracks that offer both a call to boogie and solace
