"dummy" - portishead

this has to be the album, along with massive attack's blue lines, that placed the "bristol sound" well and truly on the forefront of uk dance music.

"blue lines" - massive attack

starting out as "the wild bunch", massive attack have had an enormous influence by reggae music.  (their second lp was also done as a separate project with the dub reggae producer 'mad professor') this fused by other forms of music, such as hip hop, helped combine probably one of the landmark albums of modern dance music.  it also contains one of the best dance anthems of the 90's as voted by various dj's - "unfinished symphony".

"leftism" - leftfield

it's not very often when an artist's name is used to describe a complete genre of music.  when this album appeared it labeled a style of breakbeat orientated music that was being produced, but had yet to be given a name (other than "trip hop").  a huge influence from reggae and a slight drift towards drum'n'bass makes this lp a must for leftfield music fans.

"talvin singh presents anokha - sounds of the asian underground" - various artists

back in the mid 90's a small club opened in hoxton, london.  owned by acid jazz, and previously called the bass clef.  the blue note paved the way for london club life where larger clubs were forced to follow it's lead.  nights such as metalheadz, ninja tune's "stealth", lift, far east...and anokha on a monday.

monday nights were packed to capacity and fast became voted the best club night in london by numerous leftfield dj's.  a truly east meets west scenario where indian rhythms and percussions were laid over phat drum and bass or breakbeat tracks.  accompanied by the occasional live acts,  it wasn't always sitars and tablas...classic tunes were also heard.

"ok" - talvin singh

mercury prize winning debut lp from talvin singh.  having traveled the globe to work with musicians and producers, the result is far from "ok".  influences are apparent and the finished project works well spanning through mellow breakbeats to drum'n'bass.  definitely worthy of a listen.

"rude system" - ballistic brothers

the ballistic brothers are rocky, diesel, dave hill, uschi classen and ashley beedle.  with a production team like that, it's not hard to explain why this album is essential!  ranging form leftfield house to funky breakbeats.
